Plaza Mayor is the hub of the city, set in the Augsburg district of Madrid, very close to Puerta del Sol and Plaza de la Villa.
The square project dates back from 1581 and was ordered by Philip II, even though the construction began under the kingdom of Philip III between 1617 and 1619, on the place where once “Plaza del Arrabal” stood.
By the XVII century, the square has always represented the magnificent background for parties, performances, solemn receptions and more in general, for all public activities, including markets, executions, theatre performances and even bullfights.
Today Plaza Mayoris surely one of the most beautiful and suggestive places in Madrid, with its impressive rectangular plan surrounded by porches and closed on each side by some fine red-bricked buildings, with 237 balconies overlooking the square.
The main two of these buildings are Casa de la Panaderia, the old seat of bakers, which is entirely frescoed with paintings representing the zodiac signs and other allegories of the age, and Casa de la Carniceria, where butchers stored and sold their goods.
Today there are many open air bars and restaurantsunder the porches, where the local people and visitors stop to enjoy a pleasant break, but there are also numerous philatelic and souvenir shopsi. The square can be accessed through 9 doors, one of the most important is the Arco de Cuchilleros.
