Originally destined to be a hospital by the will of king Philip II the art centre remained such until 1965, and after risking to be torn down, it was finally declared a National Monument in 1977.
In 1986 the Reina Sofia Museum was inaugurated, but works officially terminated in 2005 with a further enlargement and the addition of three glass towers containing the lifts (in 1988). Only a small part of the immense collection of the museum is open to public and exhibited in the first two floors. The collection ranges from the end of the 19th century to works of these days.
Many of these works are by great Spanish artists, like Picasso’s “Guernica” Dali’s “Great Masturbator” and Miro’s, “man with pipe” as well as some other great artists the likes of Julio Gonzalez and Juan Gris.
